It stood up to to the worst that punishing storms, blistering sun, and salt water could inflict and helped bring the Savilles safely ashore. As a matter of fact, after their aluminum mast corroded away and sunlight destroyed the carbon fiber paddles they'd substituted, the Beckson boat hook was set in place to do the job. And at the end of their incredible voyage when they landed in Cairns, someone asked where they'd gotten the new boathook! SHORTStories BOATING WITH BECKSON OF EXTRAORDINARY Voyages WHEN Curtis and Kathleen Saville decided to row across the Atlantic Ocean, they carefully planned and built their 25-foot boat, Excalibur, themselves. They chose Beckson for the all-important deck plates, cabin hatches, ports, ventilators, diaphragm pumps, mounting clips, hose, bilge pumps, couplings, strainers, and boat hooks. In July 1981, the couple became the first Americans to row across the Atlantic Ocean, and Kathleen, the first woman to row across the North Atlantic. But they didn't stop there. In midsummer 1984, after several other rows, including one to Labrador and a 2400-mile journey down the Mississippi River, they embarked in their five year old boat on a cross-Pacific row, from Peru to Cairns, Australia—a voyage of 10,000 miles.
