January 24, 2017 Good afternoon, If you've ever wondered what the wind capacity is for a Beckson Port Lens, I can tell you. I had 10 Beckson ports with smoked lenses on my 35 ft sailboat, which was on a mooring in a harbor in the Bahamas when Hurricane Matthew drove north as a Category 4 Hurricane. My boat was 1.35 miles from the eye. It rode out the storm, while others were sunk or broken from their moorings. (One of which hit mine on the starboard side.) Upon return to the boat after the storm I discovered a combination of fresh and salt water over the floors. Looking for the cause, we found two of the port lenses shattered, though the screens were completely intact. Which leads to the conclusion that the lens burst from the sustained 145 mile winds in a Category 4 Hurricane. All the other ports held, and there was no damage below the water line. Very impressive. The lenses were installed in 1983, original with the boat. So, the threshold for the port lenses is 145 mph wind sustained for several hours. Thank you for building such a quality product. I have sealed the broken lens and am making necessary repairs to other areas of the boat. When it ever comes time to repair hatches throughout the vessel, I will certainly be repairing with Beckson hatches and lenses. Keep up the quality work!
